Title: Data Coalitions Without The State
Data coalitions – a kind of legal and regulatory umbrella to support data trusts, coops, unions, and other collective forms – can start to use available tools to get as close to data dignity as possible without waiting for comprehensive policy support.
But they also need help from what we call escrow agents – a new kind of trusted and neutral representative that sits between data coalitions and data users in order to responsibly oversee and moderate decisions about contextual information flows.
What problems would they each solve? What are the available tools? Which actors in existing data ecosystems are well-suited for these roles? And how can we actually get them off the ground?
Speakers: Matt Prewitt & Jack Henderson, RadicalxChange Foundation
Title: Data: The Case for Democratic Ownership
This session is an opportunity to explore the implications of the types of legal entities (corporation, non-profit, cooperative, DAO, etc.) available to data collectives. We will analyze how these entities impact the implementation of a human-centric data approach. And discuss why a model based on democratic ownership and governance might be the most promising option.
Attendees will leave this presentation with a more critical outlook on entity types, as well as the inspiration and framework needed to create the next wave of human-centric data projects.
Speaker: Philippe Labrecque
