Title: Data Spaces – Collaborative Innovation from Data
Speaker: Boris Otto, Fraunhofer
Data only has a value when used. Thus, in order to maximize the value of data, ecosystems form in order to share data and leverage the value of data across the boundaries of individual businesses. However, for data to be shared within – and even across – open ecosystems, a couple of prerequisites must be in place. First, trust among ecosystem members is a key success factor. Second, sovereignty over data must be ensured, refereeing to the capability of data providers to remain self-determined regarding their data even if the data is shared with third parties. Data spaces represent an adequate means to foster data sharing and the re-use of data. Not surprisingly, data spaces are a key element of the European data strategy. Non-for-profit industry associations such as Gaia-X, Fiware, IDS Association, and MyData work on de-facto standards for data spaces and, hence, support the adoption of data sharing in Europe and beyond. Large data space initiatives have formed, for example in healthcare, in automotive, and mobility and smart cities, to create open data ecosystems. The keynote talk focuses on key points in Europe’s journey towards a fair data economy in the Single European Market and gives an outlook to future developments.
